life and career

Gaby Rodgers, born in Gabrielle Rosenberg, was born in Frankfurt am Main as the daughter of the art dealer Saemy Rosenberg and great-niece of the philosopher Edmund Husserl . Also because of National Socialism, the Jewish family first moved to Switzerland and later to Amsterdam. The Rosenbergs were well acquainted with Anne Frank and her family, Gaby and her siblings played marbles with Anne during their childhood. Gaby was later able to flee with her family to England, where her father was temporarily interned, and then via Cuba and Mexico to the United States. They settled in New York.

Between 1950 and 1962, Rodgers appeared in over 20 television series as a guest actress, working with directors such as Sidney Lumet and Arthur Penn . Between 1955 and 1957 she was also seen in three theater productions on Broadway . Today she is mainly known for the film noir classic Rattennest ( Kiss Me Deadly ; 1955) by Robert Aldrich : Here she played the allegedly lesbian femme fatale Lily Carver , who at the end of the film triggers an atomic explosion in a famous and much-cited scene . In addition to Rattennest , she only played in another movie, the independent production The Big Break (1953) directed by Joseph Strick . According to her own information, she received a contract offer from producer David O. Selznick , but she turned it down because she preferred the type of work in the theater and in the fledgling television and did not think much of the publicity tricks in Hollywood.

Rodgers was married to the successful composer Jerry Leiber and they had two sons. After divorcing Leiber, she returned to acting and worked as a theater director and critic until the new millennium, for example at the traditional Barter Theater in Virginia and at Sam Shepard's Theater Genesis .
