Gaganyaan ( Sanskrit गगनयान , "sky vehicle ") is the first manned Indian spacecraft . It is made by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and operated by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The spaceship is designed for a crew of three.

A first manned mission is planned for the end of 2021. Before that, two renamed test flights are to take place. The GSLV Mk III , India's most powerful rocket, serves as the launch vehicle .

development

In February 2014, HAL handed over the first prototype of the capsule to ISRO. In May 2019, the design phase for the spaceship was completed.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) concluded a letter of intent with ISRO for the delivery of food and various technical systems for the manned missions. The latter include components for radiation protection, health monitoring, fire extinguishing systems and parachutes. The DRDO is also developing a female-humanoid robot called "Vyommitra", which is to replace the space travelers in the unmanned test flight.
