The Gaisberg is a 1267 m above sea level. A. high mountain in the municipality of Molln .
General
The 1267 m high, mostly forested Gaisberg is located in the Upper Austrian Pre-Alps in the municipality of Molln. To the west of the summit is the "Dürre Eck" at 1222 m, to the south at 1005 meters is the Mollner Hut . A marked hiking trail leads over the summit. Limestone mining by the Bernegger company is of economic importance .
Mining
Mining was presumably practiced since the 13th century (Hutmanngraben), there is documentary evidence of ironworking from around 1570. In 1569 the Steyr mayor and a knife maker from Steinbach an der Steyr applied to the emperor for permission to mine iron, as the rural smithies from Steyr did not sufficient Innerberger Eisen ( Erzberg ) could be supplied. At the end of the 18th century the ore deposits were exhausted. After several renewed, obviously unsuccessful, attempts, the rights for the "Eisenstein-Bau" have expired since 1882. Today limestone is mined (Bernegger company). According to a decision made in 2000, the old quarry at Dürren Eck is being renatured and replaced by a quarry on Pfaffenboden (municipality boundary to Ternberg ) that is no longer visible from the valley .
