The Galabov High School in Sofia was founded in 1960 and has been one of the most popular schools in Bulgaria ever since . About 80 percent of the graduates of the Galabov grammar school are admitted to the universities of Bulgaria. It is one of several German-speaking high schools in Bulgaria.

history

The grammar school was opened on September 15, 1960 as the 91st polytechnic high school (Bulgarian: 91st Единно средно политехническо училище, 91st ЕСПУ) with five teachers and 125 students. Since the beginning of the school year 1961/62 , teachers sent from the GDR have been teaching at this school. In the period before 1990 the German grammar school in Sofia was given the honorary name " Karl Liebknecht ". As in all Bulgarian schools at the time, students were required to wear uniforms. For male youth this uniform consisted of a dark blue single-breasted suit with collar tabs and a peaked cap . The collar tabs and the peaked cap were decorated with the insignia of the grammar school. The female youth wore a black smock with a white collar. Particular emphasis was placed on the length of the students' hairstyle. Girls were allowed to wear long hair, but not open, only as braids. If there was any doubt about the permissibility of the length of the hairstyle or additional clothing items, the student was excluded from the class.

Before 1990, only Bulgarian, mathematics and Russian and the subject “Scientific Communism” were taught in the Bulgarian language. Other mostly natural science subjects were partly or completely in German. Traditionally, German teachers taught science subjects in German. That is why many children of embassy staff attended the grammar school.

After the political upheaval in Bulgaria, the grammar school was also renamed and given the name “91. German-speaking grammar school Prof. Dr. Konstantin Galabov ”(Bulgarian:“ 91. Немска езикова гимназия Проф. Константин Гълъбов ”). Galabov was a Bulgarian philologist and journalist, a graduate of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel and an associate professor at the Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia for many years . He was chairman of the PEN in Bulgaria.

classes

The admission of students to language high schools in Bulgaria takes place after the seventh grade. The curriculum, which is mandatory for Bulgarian schools, is interrupted by a preparatory stage after the seventh grade. In this year of the preparatory level, the German language is taught intensively, with the students only having about 18 hours a week in German as a subject, only sports, Bulgarian, music and mathematics. After this preparatory year, the class level counting continues with class 9. The Abitur is thus achieved after the 12th grade. Since school enrollment in Bulgaria generally only takes place at the age of 7, the 12th grade students are usually older than 18 years.

Since the school year 1994, generally 5 to 8 German teachers have been teaching at the Galabov-Gymnasium. In the mid-1990s, the German department was also rebuilt so that a binational educational qualification can be achieved. Therefore, depending on the number of subjects taught in German, a distinction is made between two types of classes at the seven-class Galabov Gymnasium, with the division into these classes at the end of the eighth grade with a written and oral entrance examination:

  • 5 classes with reinforced German lessons (language diploma classes)
  • 2 classes with almost exclusively German-language lessons (department classes)

Those who successfully complete the language diploma class with the language diploma examination level II of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the federal states are exempt from a language entrance examination at German universities. For this purpose, the students in the language diploma classes have between 5 and 8 hours of German lessons per week, in which, above all, the basis for successfully completing the language diploma examination is laid. Other subjects are not continuously taught in German in the language diploma classes.

On the other hand, the students of the two departmental classes from the ninth grade onwards have German lessons of 6 hours per week, in addition to other subjects such as mathematics, history, biology and chemistry, which are also taught in German. In addition to the Bulgarian Abitur, the so-called high-performance students can also take the German Abitur and are therefore considered to be educational residents in Germany . The written Abitur is taken in the subjects Bulgarian, German, mathematics and optionally biology or chemistry. Students must take three oral exams: Bulgarian, German and one other compulsory subject of their choice (mathematics, biology, chemistry, English or history).

useful information

In order to practice what you have learned and to get to know a different culture, there is a regular bilateral student exchange with different German schools (as of June 2017):

The school is also attracting a great deal of attention within Bulgaria. In a circular from the German embassy in 2007, it says about the awarding of certificates to the high school graduates:

The special respect that this German Abitur also enjoys from our Bulgarian partners and friends was made clear by the participation and the kind words of the Vice-Minister in the Ministry of Education Atanassov ... Since 1998 Bulgarian students have been able to take the German Abitur here. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why this school is considered the best in the country.
