Galahad is a German medieval folk rock band from Dinslaken . The band is named after Galahad , knight of the round table at the court of the legendary King Arthur .

history

Galahad was founded in 1985 by Paul Alexander Jost. In the further course there were changing line-ups. Most of the group has existed in its current form since 1997.

Many live performances in Germany (such as the young talent competition Newcomer of the Year 1987 , WDR-Folk Prize, West-3-Fernsehen ) and neighboring countries have taken the group to folk-rock festivals (such as Euro-Folk-Festival Ingelheim, Little Woodstock, Festival on the Altburg ), various town and castle festivals, open-air and indoor concerts (with Jethro Tull and Paddy Goes To Holyhead, among others ) as well as matinees and vernissages, accompanied by numerous radio portraits and interviews.

The mixture of medieval elements with modern rock music brought Galahad the award as “Best Folk Rock Band” at the German Rock and Pop Prize in 2007 and 2014 as well as contracts for numerous compilation CDs with Sony Music and BMG , among others , whose sampler Celtic Circle lasted 2 weeks was at the top of the charts in Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand and was awarded two gold records .

style

Starting as an acoustic quartet, a typical sound developed over time. This resulted in a varied repertoire from “concertante” to “danceable” with a few borrowings from Renaissance and Baroque music , classical , folk and rock. Elements of rock, music from the Middle Ages and classical music combined with Irish-Celtic mysticism result in an idiosyncratic style, to which the varied instrumentation also contributes.

In the texts, old topics are often worked up and projected into the present, for example in the play The Return of the Piper , which is about the (fictional) return of the Pied Piper from Hameln . One critic described Galahad's music as a "soundtrack to a live role-playing game". The mixture of the Middle Ages, rock and Celtic mysticism does not lose touch with the present.
