features

The bronze leaf is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 45 centimeters. They form dense mats of branched rhizomes with scaly bracts . The leaves are stalked, the leaf blade circular to broadly ovate with a heart-shaped base, 4 to 15 centimeters wide and serrate or notched. From the first night frosts it turns reddish or bronze in color.

The flowering period extends from June to July. The bare flower stem is 20 to 40 centimeters long. The spike-like grapes are 5 to 10 centimeters long, the crown white, the corolla lobes elongated. The stamens and staminodes are almost identical and fused together on the stamens , which in turn are tubular and fused at their base on the petals , with which they also fall off. The bottom at its end blunt tapered anthers are unicompartmental and open horizontally. The stylus is short.

Both diploid and tetraploid clans are known of the bronze leaf, 2n = 6 or 12.

Occurrence

The bronze leaf occurs in the southeast of the USA in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama in sparse mountain forests together with Kalmia latifolia or Rhododendron maximum .

use

The bronze leaf is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rhododendrons and rock gardens. The species has been in culture since 1756 at the latest.
