Gallus Berger

Gallus Berger (born April 10, 1903 in Buchs SG ; † February 6, 1982 in Zurich ) was a prominent figure in the Swiss labor movement as president of the Swiss Construction and Woodworkers Association (SBHV) and social democratic national councilor in the 1950s and 1960s.

Berger was a citizen of Salez in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and trained as a bricklayer in Chur . After additional training as a plasterer in Zurich , he worked as a bricklayer and foreman in various places in Switzerland, France and Belgium. In 1927 he came back to Zurich. As an active shop steward of the construction workers' union , he became secretary of the Winterthur section of the SBHV in 1936 and central secretary in 1939. 1956 to 1968 he presided over Switzerland. Construction and woodworkers' association and in this function also belonged to the board of the International of Construction and Woodworkers. In 1955 he was elected to the National Council in the canton of Zurich on the social democratic list, to which he was a member until 1971. In Parliament, labor law and social security issues were his specialty. Berger was also active in the cooperative movement .
