The Gallusmarkt in Grünberg , the "Upper Hessian Oktoberfest", is one of the oldest annual markets in Hesse . It is named after Saint Gall , whose name day is celebrated on October 16.

history

1480 was the then Emperor Friedrich III. by Landgraf Heinrich submitted by Hesse's proposal to grant the right of city Grünberg, a market on Gall hold. The Roman-German Emperor Friedrich III. thereupon granted the city the right in 1481 to hold a market on the respective day of Pope Callistus I. The imperial certificate is now in the museum in the hospital of the city of Grünberg.

The area has been Käswiese since 1869 , whereby the Krämermarkt was relocated to Gießener Straße and Theo-Koch-Straße in 1972, as the available area was reduced in size - mainly due to the construction of the Gallushalle and the erection of a larger festival tent. Before that, the Gallusmarkt probably took place on the market square and later, when it gained in importance and size, on the right and left of Londorfer Straße. A parcel of land there is called Auf dem Gallusmarkt . Due to poor soil conditions, the market was temporarily relocated to the paved roads of the Laimenkaute in 1838 .

A modern cattle auction has been attached to the Gallusmarkt since 1948. Cattle were already auctioned in the Middle Ages, in the 19th century only machines and equipment for agriculture were shown, today the Gallusmarkt has developed into a general trade show for agricultural machinery and livestock. In 2010, due to changes in agriculture, the cattle market was withdrawn from the program. Instead, there was an animal presentation. Both events are to be held alternately every two years.

The annual highlight of the market is the original Grünberger Wurzelbürger brushing, introduced in 1951, during the traditional morning pint . Here, newcomers who have made a voluntary contribution to their adopted home are accepted into the group of Grünbergers after having passed a dialect test. Afterwards, those present sing the Gallusmarktlied by Dr. Karl Stein - born in Grünberg in 1885 - based on the tune of O old lad glory .

Since 1972, the Upper Hessian Art Exhibition has been taking place in the rooms of the historic Barefoot Monastery parallel to the Gallusmarkt .

Gallus Market Commission

Together with the city of Grünberg, the Gallusmarktkommission, founded in 1926, is responsible for the design of the program and the process as well as for filling the fairground and awarding it to a party host. The commission is divided into various sub-committees: the art committee, the Grimmicher Bobbekist (formerly the children's festival committee ) and the brush committee.

Grimmicher Märtfraa

In 1974 the Grimmicher Märtfraa (Grünberger Marktfrau ) was created as a symbol of the market. The choice is made by a committee made up of the morning pint committee of the Gallus Market Commission. In alternation, a business woman or a private person is appointed as market woman who - in addition to representing the market and the city of Grünberg on festive occasions - works with a seat and vote on the commission.
