Rudolf von Travers

Johann Rudolf von Travers zu Ortenstein (* between 1585 and 1594 ; † after June 11, 1642 in Tumegl / Tomils ) was a Graubünden judge and officer from the Graubünden noble family Travers .

Rudolf studied at the University of Dillingen . From 1614 to 1632 he was a mercenary in the service of France. He married Catarina Lucretia von Planta (* 1610), the daughter of Pompejus Planta . Their only child, Johann, was born around 1625. In 1620 Rudolf was a judge at the Chur Criminal Court . In 1624 he was the ambassador of Graubünden to the Diet in Solothurn . When the French marched into Graubünden in the same year, he became a captain and, in 1625, a lieutenant colonel in his cousin's Schauenstein regiment. In 1635 he was stationed in the same position under Duke Henri II. De Rohan in Valtellina . In 1637 he was involved in a conspiracy against Henri. In 1639 he represented Graubünden in the negotiations for the 1st Milan capitulate. When Henri left the country, Rudolf and his regiment entered the service of Spain. Rudolf was one of the most influential politicians in Graubünden at the end of the 1630s.

Rudolf died in 1642, his wife Catarina lived with her son until 1649 in Paspels , where her father's house had belonged to her. When her brother-in-law Johann Viktor von Travers died childless in 1649 , her son Johann inherited the Ortenstein Castle . From then on she lived there. Johann was elevated to the baron rank by the emperor; In 1674 he became the owner of the Rhäzüns Castle . He married in 1645 and Catarina had nine grandchildren. Since the other Traversian lines gradually died out, Catarina is the ancestor of all later Travers. Among her descendants were two generals. The family was raised to the rank of count in 1776.
