In 1915, the French administration released Gangara as a separate canton from the canton of Tanout. The canton's leadership was given to a local dynasty of settled Tuaregs . The rural community of Gangara emerged in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the canton of Gangara, the southern part of which was detached as an independent rural community of Falenko.
