history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Tanout district. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements , the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the Tanout district was converted into the Tanout arrondissement. From 1984 to 1988 the officer Torda Haïnikoye headed the arrondissement as sub-prefect .

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center of Tanout, the cantons of Tanout, Gangara, Olléléwa and Tarka / Belbédji and a residual zone. In 2011, Belbédji was separated from the Tanout department as a separate department.

population

The Tanout department has 439,741 inhabitants according to the 2012 census. In the 2001 census, before the separation of Belbédji, there were 338,842 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 191,738 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 149,318 inhabitants.

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
