Torda Haïnikoye

Torda Haïnikoye (* 1942 in Bonkoukou ; † May 15, 2008 in Niamey ) was a Nigerien officer and politician .

Life

Torda Haïnikoye became a member of Niger's armed forces in 1962 . From 1975 he was deputy commander and from 1977 commander of the 1st tank squadron in Niamey. From 1983 he worked as a commander in Dirkou and in 1984 as a commander of the 3rd battalion in Zinder . The regime of the Supreme Military Council then entrusted him with tasks in civil administration. Haïnikoye worked as sub-prefect of Tanout from 1984 to 1988 and as prefect of Zinder from 1988 to 1989 . He was then from 1989 to 1991 with the title of Prefect President of the Niamey Municipal Association appointed mayor of the capital.

During his tenure, the events of February 9, 1990, when student protests on the Kennedy Bridge in Niamey were violently suppressed by the military. Several fatalities were the result. Haïnikoye, who had meanwhile moved to Tahoua as prefect, was called to account by the national conference, which had taken power in the state from the military in 1991, together with officers Amadou Seyni Maïga , Saminou Oumarou and Mossi Tinni. The four officers were removed from office on August 29, 1991. Haïnikoye, who last held the military rank of Chef d'escadron , retired a year later with the armed forces.

In later years Torda Haïnikoye resumed his political career. President Mamadou Tandja , a former member of the Supreme Military Council, appointed him head of cabinet in 2000 . In 2004 Haïnikoye was elected mayor of his hometown Bonkoukou. He died four years later after a brief illness.

Haïnikoye was married and had nine children.
