history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Matamèye district, with Matamèye as the main town. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements , the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the Matamèye district was converted into the Matamèye arrondissement.

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The capital was moved to Kantché in the same year and the department of Matamèye was renamed Kantché. The department has been divided into communes since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center of Matamèye and the canton of Kantché.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Kantché department has 401,012 inhabitants. In the 2001 census it was 246,496 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 164,045 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 114,610 inhabitants.
