Belbédji is a department in the region of Zinder in Niger .

geography

The department is located in the center of the country. It extends over the territory of the rural parish of Tarka . The eponymous capital is Belbédji . The Tarka Valley runs through the department .

history

The department goes back to the administrative post ( poste administratif ) of Belbédji, which was established in 1988. In 2011 the administrative post was removed from the Tanout department and raised to the Belbédji department.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Belbédji department has 97,484 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2012 the population increased by an average of 4.1% annually (nationwide: 3.9%).

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
