Olléléwa (also: Olléléoua ) is a rural community in the Tanout department in Niger .

geography

The village of Guézaoua in the municipality of Ollélewa

Olléléwa is located in the Damergou landscape in the Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Gangara in the northwest, Tanout in the northeast, Wamé in the east, Dakoussa in the southeast, Tirmini in the south and Falenko in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 135 villages, 214 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural municipality is the village of Olléléwa.

history

In Olléléwa there is a traditional mansion ( French : chefferie traditionnelle ) of the Tuareg , which goes back to the 17th century, when Tuareg from the Aïr settled here. The chief of Olléléwa is subordinate to the Sultan of Zinder . The German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth entered the place on January 6th, 1851. Barth counted Olléléwa, at that time the seat of the former ruler of Assodé and a market town, to the politically most important villages in Damergou. Other settlements in today's municipality of Olléléwa with influential rulers in Barth's time were Farara , Koulan Karki and Taghelel . In the village of Guidjigaoua , the first French administrative post was located in Damergou from May 1901 until it was relocated to Djadjidouna in what is now the municipality of Tanout in September 1901 . The rural community of Olléléwa emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the canton of Olléléwa.

population

In the 2012 census, Olléléwa had 116,895 inhabitants who lived in 18,138 households, of which 2369 inhabitants in the main town. At the 2001 census the population was 75,003 in 13,063 households and at the 1988 census the population was 43,129 in 8154 households. Members of the Tuareg, Hausa and Fulbe ethnic groups live in Olléléwa . The Hausa sub-group Damagarawa is mainly engaged in agriculture. The Fulbe subgroup Tchilanko'en specializes in agropastoralism . The Fulbe subgroups Katchinanko'en, Oudah'en and Wodaabe as well as the Tuareg subgroups Imouzgou and Iwillimiden practice mainly remote grazing . Finally, members of the Tuareg subgroups Albourdatan and Araban live in the rural community, whose main livelihood is the caravan trade .

Economy and Infrastructure

Olléléwa is listed in the early warning system for food crises at a medium risk level, but in the event of a crisis - similar to the neighboring municipality of Tirmini - it is an important starting point for aid distribution measures due to its connection to National Road 1 . Olléléwa is also connected to the regional capital Agadez in the north by the national road 11 . Weekly markets are held in the villages of Bakin Birgi , Guézaoua, Olléléwa and Sabon Kafi , of which the cattle market in Bakin Birgi is the most important. A crude oil refinery of the Société de Raffinage de Zinder (SORAZ) near Bakin Birgi started operations in 2011.
