The passage grave of Rössberga is a passage grave ( Swedish Ganggrift ) in the parish Valtorp, in the Swedish municipality of Falköping . It was archaeologically examined by Carl Cullberg in 1962. Skeletal remains of at least 128 people, amber beads and ceramic shards were found. Around 800 ceramic shards were found in front of the corridor. The passage grave of the funnel beaker culture (TBK), built from flat stone , dates from around 3600 BC. The passage grave is a type of Neolithic megalithic system , which consists of a chamber and a structurally separated, lateral passage. This form is primarily found in Denmark, Germany and Scandinavia, as well as occasionally in France and the Netherlands.

location

Driving from Torbjörntorp in the direction of Broddetorp, the passage grave in Rössberga is about two kilometers east of Varnhemsvägen on a meadow.

description

The megalithic complex is located in a stone mound about 25 m in diameter. The long corridor, oriented to the east, leads into an approximately nine meters long, two meters wide and in places two meters high chamber, which is divided into 17 sections by means of upright panels . In the extension of the corridor there are stones in the chamber, creating a division of the chamber that can be compared to that in Rævehøj on Zealand . Part of the hill border has been preserved in the access area.

context

Västergötland's facilities are concentrated in an area of just 40 × 25 km, the Falbygden around Falköping . The group was formerly regarded as a late branch of the megalithic culture. But the investigation by Rössberga gave indications of an age comparable to that of the other plants in the area of the funnel beaker culture (TBK). A close connection with the Bohuslän , which was emphasized earlier, is not tenable, as there are finds in Västergötland that have close ties to Skåne and Denmark. The majority of Västergötland's systems have rectangular chambers, which are often considerably longer than those in the rest of the country and in Denmark. They reach lengths of 17 m.

About 30 m away are the remains of a stone box (Rössberga Hällkista).
