Gangnam Blues (Original title: Gangnam 1970 ) is a gangster film by the South Korean director Yoo Ha from 2015.

action

Jong-dae and Yong-ki grew up as orphans like real brothers. Both live in poor conditions. You are hired by a gang of gangsters to break up a party's election rally. There they get lost. Jong-dae stays in the gang that hired him and over time becomes like a son to the leader, Gil-su. Jong-dae also lives with him with Gil-su's daughter Seon-hye. Yong-ki has meanwhile joined a Seoul gang and has risen up there. Little by little, the gangs and corrupt politicians begin to take an interest in the country south of Seoul, called Gangnam . Since Seoul is already overpopulated and due to the bad conditions with North Korea should not grow northwards, the groups and politicians see the future in the south. So the gangs begin to fight for land in Gangnam, take the farmers living there by surprise and buy the land from them cheaply, while after the purchases they artificially drive up the prices. One morning Jong-dae becomes embroiled in a conflict of interest about developments in Gangnam in the southern part of Seoul. He lives with Gil-su and Seon-hye, who treat him like family. In the meantime, Yong-ki joins Seoul's most powerful criminal organization and fights for the lands in Gangnam.

Jong-dae found Yong-ki by chance. You decide to work together. Jong-dae is mainly interested in the land in Gangnam, Yong-ki in the money. Yong-ki spies on his own gang and so both can build their own empire.

background

The story has a real background. In the early 1970s, South Korea was still poor, the Korean War did not end until 1953. During the dictatorship of Park Chung-hee everything was done to achieve enormous economic growth, one speaks of the miracle on the Han River . But this also led to corruption , especially ties between politicians and gangs.

publication

Gangnam Blues was released in South Korean theaters on January 21, 2015. In March 2015, the film was also re-cut in Chinese cinemas. To benefit from Lee Min-ho's popularity in China , more scenes with Lee were added, especially to shed light on the love affair between him and Kim Ji-soo. The version also has an alternate ending.

reception

Pierce Conran had very positive reviews of the film. The film even trumps comparable gangster films such as Nameless Gangster (2012) and New World (2013). The film is beautifully designed and impresses with the camera work, Lee Min-ho in the lead role and the soundtrack from the 1970s.
