Garry Walker

Garry Walker (* 1974 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish conductor. He is Artistic Director of Conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland , until 2020 Chief Conductor of the Rhenish Philharmonic and designated Head of Opera North in Leeds .

life and career

Walker attended St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh. He studied cello with Ralph Kirshbaum and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music . In 1999 he won the Leeds Conductor Competition. In October of the same year he stepped in for the sick Daniele Gatti and conducted the opening concert of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican . From then until 2018 he was a permanent guest conductor of the orchestra. From 2003 to 2007 he was a permanent guest conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) and conducted the orchestra in its performances at the Edinburgh Festival . From 2017 to 2020 he was chief conductor of the Rheinische Philharmonie, Koblenz. In June 2019 it was announced that Walker is the new Music Director of Opera North and will take up his post in August 2020.

Walker has worked in the UK with all the BBC orchestras , the Hallé Orchestra , the London Philharmonic , the London Sinfonietta , the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, as well as with chamber orchestras such as the Britten Sinfonia, the Manchester Camerata, the Northern Sinfonia, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields .

On the continent he has u. a. performed with the Nieuw Ensemble (Amsterdam), the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (Gothenburg), the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Orchester Philharmonique de Luxembourg and the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin . He made his US debut in the 2011/12 concert season with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, followed by concerts with the Pacific Symphony (Orange County, California) in 2012/13.

Garry Walker lives with his family in Tübingen.
