The garden cineraria ( Pericallis hybrida ) or lice plant is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
description
The garden cineraria is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 15 to 40, rarely up to 60 centimeters. The leaf blade is dark green, triangular-heart-shaped to eilanzettlich, 6 to 20 centimeters long and wide and toothed to lobed. The petiole of the upper leaves is winged and has auricles at the base. Twenty to over a hundred flower heads together form a hemispherical and dense panicle with a diameter of about 2.5 centimeters. There are nine to twelve ray florets per head . These are colored blue, violet, purple, red, copper-red, pink or white, but they can also be colored with a white background or filled. The tubular flowers are of the same color, but often darker. They can also be whitish or yellow.
The flowering period extends from March to May.
origin
The species probably originates from a cross between Pericallis cruenta (Masson ex L'Hér.) Webb and Pericallis lanata (L'Hér.) B.Nord. , both of which are found in forests in the western Canary Islands . This hybrid probably originated in culture.
use
The garden cinerary is rarely used as an annual ornamental plant for summer flower beds. It has been in culture at least since 1777. There are numerous varieties, for example 'Cinderella mixed'. It reaches a height of 20 centimeters and has a compact, spherical inflorescence, the flowers are mixed colors. There are also types of paint.
