Gary John Joseph Humphries (born July 6, 1958 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian politician and represented the Australian Capital Territory as a senator in the Australian Senate from 2003 to 2013 .

Humphries was born in Sydney in 1958. He studied at the Australian National University in Canberra .

After Humphries was elected to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly for the Liberal Party of Australia for the first time in 1989 , he held several ministerial posts there, including serving as the territory's finance minister from 1999 to 2001. In 2000 he succeeded Kate Carnell as Chief Minister, previously he had been appointed Deputy Chief Minister in 1997. In 2001, Humphries was replaced as Chief Minister by Jon Stanhope as his party's electoral defeat . On January 24, 2003, he resigned from the Legislative Assembly to replace the resigned Senator Margaret Reid in the Australian Senate. On February 18, he was finally appointed by the Legislative Assembly to represent the territory in the Senate. In the 2004 Senate election, Humphries was confirmed in office. On September 6, 2013, he resigned from the Senate.
