Katy Gallagher (born March 17, 1970 in Weston Creek , Australian Capital Territory ) is an Australian politician .

Life

Gallagher grew up in the Weston Creek District of Canberra and attended Melrose High School and Stirling College. She graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Sociology in 1990 .

She was initially employed as a social worker and worked with disabled children. From 1994 to 1997 she worked as a lawyer for the People First ACT , a support organization for the mentally disabled. Gallagher participated in the labor movement and served as a case manager and organizer in the Public Sector Union . She is a member of the Australian Labor Party and was Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) from May 16, 2011 to December 11, 2014 and thus also Mayor of the capital Canberra . Andrew Barr is her successor .
