Jon Stanhope

Jonathon Donald "Jon" Stanhope (born April 29, 1951 in Gundagai , New South Wales ) is an Australian politician . The member of the Australian Labor Party was Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) from November 2001 to May 2011 and thus also Mayor of the capital Canberra .

Stanhope grew up in New South Wales but moved to Canberra to study law at the Australian National University . In 1988 he was elected as a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly (Legislative Council) and was opposition leader from the start. In 2001 he took up the post of Chief Minister after the Labor Party won 8 out of 17 seats in the elections and became the strongest party. Three years later, Stanhope was confirmed in office when his party secured an absolute majority with an additional seat win. On May 12, 2011, he announced his resignation; his successor was his previous deputy Katy Gallagher .
