The Hohenems-Dornbirn airfield is an Austrian airfield in the municipality of the Vorarlberg city of Hohenems . It is the only airfield (with the exception of three heliports in Feldkirch , Ludesch and Nenzing ) in Vorarlberg.
The airfield is located in the Ried not far from Vorarlberger Straße (L 190) in the municipality of Hohenems.
history
Before the Second World War there were a few small airfields in Vorarlberg, which were mainly used for glider flying with winch starts. In the 1930s there were first considerations for an airfield in Bregenz and later the idea of a regional airport in the Ried west of Dornbirn came up.
In the 1950s there were plans for a larger airport in Höchst , but these soon fizzled out.
As early as 1949, when the Hohenems sports flight group was re-established after the war, it found a new, suitable flying site north of the city in the Seemähder plot - at the place where the airfield still exists today. First we started and landed on grass, later on gravel. The desire for an asphalt runway arose more and more. Several other smaller airfields in Frastanz , Götzis , Lustenau or Dornbirn could only be used provisionally and could hardly be expanded due to the location. For this reason, the airfield in Hohenems was expanded to become a state airfield. Since this would have exceeded the financial possibilities of the Hohenems sports flight group, the airfield was taken over by the Vorarlberger Aero Club, which still operates it today.
In the 1960s , the infrastructure was constantly expanded. A hangar , a terminal building and a petrol station followed on the premises.
In 2005, the last major renovation at the airfield was completed with the construction of a new main building. In addition to the flight control center, the flight police and a restaurant are also located here.
use
The airfield is used by the Vorarlberg sports aviation groups for their activities. A flight operations center for the Austrian flight police has been set up in Hohenems since December 15, 1968 . A police helicopter is stationed here, which was also used for rescue flights together with the rescue organizations until 2000. Since 2001 the helicopter has been available exclusively for police operations.
In 1973 the Rheintalflug was founded with the home airfield Hohenems-Dornbirn. Initially only taxi flights were carried out, later from 1984 also scheduled flights to Vienna and holiday flights. Due to insufficient capacities and the too short runway in Hohenems, operations were relocated to St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport at the end of the 1980s .
In June 2018, a training meeting of the world's best formation skydivers took place here for the third time .
