The flight police is a department of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior . The duty is provided by the executive officers of the flight police in uniform.

In 2011 the flight police officers completed 10,684 flights with a total flight time of 4434 flight hours . Of these flights, 1161 were related to state police activities, 2020 to criminal police and 3354 to security police activities. 791 flights served to rescue uninjured people. Since 1997 there have been five helicopters crashed by the Austrian flight police.

tasks

The management of the flight police coordinates and carries out flight operations in the service of maintaining public order, peace and security. These are flights in state police and criminal police matters, flights in connection with major events or traffic monitoring. Special security tasks are also performed in the area of civil defense. So u. a. supports the fire brigades in fighting fires from the air or in the event of other natural disasters. Search and rescue services are carried out for the Civil Aviation Authority (ACG). The flight police are very often called to rescue ropes in difficult alpine terrain or to search for missing people.

The rescue and ambulance flights, which used to be carried out by the flight police, have not been carried out by the BMI helicopters since July 1, 2001. Various providers, such as the Christophorus Air Rescue Association, are now used for this.

The training takes place in the department's own school center. Executives are trained there to become pilots and aircraft maintenance personnel. The training of flight observers and flight rescuers as well as their entire further training is coordinated and directed by the responsible ministerial department. In addition, there is the training of external personnel (e.g. fire fighters - training to become fire service airmen).

The purchase of new aircraft and their maintenance is also organized internally. The maintenance and technical support of the aircraft is a particularly responsible task which is carried out by the department's own specialists.

Another important task is the involvement of the air police in the field of aviation law, especially in the enactment and drafting of new legal provisions in this sector. Participation in the investigation of border incidents in the airspace and attacks on the security of civil aviation is another area of responsibility. In addition to clarifying the situation, it is important to serve international organizations as rapporteurs.

Locations

The locations of the flight police are known as flight operations centers (FESt). The largest location is the Vienna-Meidling flight operations center, where the headquarters of the Austrian flight police and the Federal Ministry of the Interior's own helicopter flight school are also located. The FESt Vienna is also the only flight operations center in Austria that has a branch office attached, which has been located at Vienna Airport since 2010 and, among other things, performs airport surveillance flights.

development

In September 2006 the tender for the purchase of new multi-purpose helicopters was issued. The decision in favor of the type EC 135 from Eurocopter was made in September 2007. The total costs for the eight helicopters, including retraining for pilots and technicians, amounted to EUR 47.4 million.

In the future, the helicopter fleet is to be "type clean". The delivery of the 8 EC 135 P2 + not only resulted in an adjustment to international police and technical standards, but also assumed a leadership role. The helicopters are all equipped for the operation of the most modern thermal imaging devices ( Forward Looking Infrared for short FLIR) and full HD video systems and are approved for operation with night vision goggles for short NVG . Four of the helicopters are equipped with a thermal imaging device tower of Wescam MX 15i brand, a searchlight equipped Spectrolab SX-16 Nightsun and a plant for the direct image transfer to an operations center. The four helicopters equipped with this additional equipment are Single Pilot IFR approved and also have an autopilot and weather radar.

As a result of the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January 2015, the Austrian security authorities came to the conclusion that it was important to get special forces to the scene quickly. For this purpose, the Austrian government decided to purchase four larger, partially armored helicopters. Which type is involved has not yet been communicated. The new helicopters should join the flight police fleet in 2017 at the earliest.

On December 5, 2017, the purchase agreement was signed with Airbus Helicopters for the purchase of 4 H-135 P3s and 2 H-125s (AS-350B3e). These helicopters will receive the BMI in the course of 2019.
