Gary Mark Smith (born April 27, 1956 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania ) is an American street photographer .

Smith takes photos on the world's most dangerous roads. Through his haunting and neither cynical nor satirical approach to his motifs, he consciously succeeds in capturing textual compositions in his pictures.

Career

Between 1982 and 2005 Smith made a name for himself as an innovative global street photographer who, in the course of his development, succeeded in blurring the lines between journalism, documentary and art in his work. He takes an interest in the dangers and dramas of history and thus uses the visual stimuli and an intellectual, stimulating lead in his recordings as a contemporary witness.

Hurricane Katrina
Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

On September 1, 2005, the American Red Cross dispatched Smith to the disaster area left by Hurricane Katrina and the flood in New Orleans , Louisiana, where he served as a member of the relief organization's first-aid team building rescue shelters in southern Louisiana, just outside of the flood affected areas of New Orleans. In 2009, eight of the pictures he shot there were included in the permanent exhibition of the art collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).

Because of his risky historical photography, Smith is considered the godfather of so-called "citizen journalism" and is regarded by contemporary street photographers as a pioneer who brought modern street photography to a high level. Documenting the roads of our world took him to more than 60 countries on six continents. His snapshots, taken on the streets of the world, capture customs, advertising and typical urban elements of a certain place and are characterized by a special flair for the unique and unusual in a crowd. They are now part of private art collections and have been included in the collections of important museums in North America, South America and Europe.

In October 2010, two of the photos from the "Sleeping in the City cycle" were auctioned at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film as part of the first benefit auction in more than 30 years at Sotheby’s in New York.
