Bruno Paulin Gaston Paris (born August 9, 1839 in Avenay-Val-d'Or , † March 5, 1903 in Cannes ) was a French philologist.

Gaston Paris was the son of the writer and philologist Paulin Paris . He studied a. a. in Bonn with Friedrich Diez Romance philology and was professor of French language and literature at the Collège de France in Paris from 1872 . He was active in many fields, but mainly devoted himself to French literature of the Middle Ages and established Romance philology as an independent discipline in France by transferring the philological method developed by Karl Lachmann to the edition of Old French and Old Provencal texts. Here he was in lively exchange with the Swiss Romance scholar Adolf Tobler , whom he had met while studying in Bonn. He wrote a Grammaire historique de la langue française (1868), in which he also opposed the linguistic puristic tendencies in French grammarography. Paris founded the French interdisciplinary review magazine Revue critique d'histoire et de littérature (1866–1935) and the specialist journal for Romance studies Romania (1872–).

In 1901 Paris was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
