Gaston Darbour
Gaston Charles Guillaume Darbour (* 1869 in Sedan ; † 1941 in Paris ) was a French graphic artist who mainly worked in the technique of etching . His work can be attributed to Art Nouveau .
life and work
At the age of fourteen Gaston Darbour's interest in the visual arts was aroused when he saw the illustrated illustrations in a daily newspaper, and from then on he began to be more interested in them. His parents, unimpressed by his career aspirations, sent him to Germany , Austria and England with the hope that he would abandon the project .
At the age of twenty, however, he enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris , where he found his teachers with Jules Lefebvre and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant . Completely dissatisfied with his studies - he described the time spent there as "useless" - a friend brought him to Félicien Rops to show him a drawing book, whereupon he encouraged him to turn to the technique of etching.
It seems that Darbour didn't have to rely on his art for a living. For this reason he was able to allow himself to work in a rural idyll, independent of the essential Parisian art market in Château d'Uzos , five kilometers from Pau . Darbour exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts .
In 1897 he was asked to design a lithograph for the important Art Nouveau magazine L'Estampe Moderne . His preferred technique, however, was etching in all of its variants, which he only printed in very small editions, with a few exceptions. Drawings or paintings have rarely been made.
