François Gustave Gaston Maugras (born July 11, 1884 in Le Plessis-Hébert , Département Eure , † 1965 in Paris ) was a French diplomat .

Life

François Gustave Gaston Maugras was a son of Gaston Maugras (1850-1927), historian, and Marie Cécile Bapst (* 1858), a niece of the ambassador Edmond Bapst ; Brother of the diplomat Roger Maugras . He married Aimée d'Abzac in 1927; their daughter died in March 1965. Gaston Maugras studied law and philology . In 1908 he joined the Foreign Service and became an attaché in Berlin . In 1911 he was Legation Secretary in Washington, DC In 1918 he was Legation Secretary in Bangkok and in 1919 he held the same position in Beijing . From 1924 to December 1925 he was consul general in Jerusalem and from December 1925 to December 1929 envoy in Tehran . In 1927 he was employed by Henri Ponsot as the High Commissioner for the League of Nations Mandate for Syria and Lebanon . From December 1934 to November 1938 he was envoy to Budapest and from November 1938 to 1941 he was envoy to Athens . From November 21, 1944 to 1948, he was ambassador to Ankara .
