Left tributaries South Gataga River

The Gataga River is a right tributary of the Kechika River in the north of the Canadian province of British Columbia .

The name "Gataga" comes from the Sekani language and means "white water", which refers to the melt water of the glaciated source region, which gives the river a slightly gray color.

location

The Gataga River rises south of the Battle of Britain Range in the Muskwa Ranges , a mountain range in the far north of the Rocky Mountains . The river initially flows west through the mountains. After about 50 km the South Gataga River meets the river from the left. The Gataga River now turns to the northwest and flows a further 100 km in a wide mountain valley to its confluence with the Kechika River. Shortly before its mouth, the Gataga River reaches the Rocky Mountain Trench , in which the Kechika River runs.

The river section below the confluence of the South Gataga River is within the Dune Za Keyih Provincial Park and Protected Area . Canoe tours are offered on this stretch of the river .
