Gatehead is a village in the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire . It is located about 35 km south-southwest of Glasgow on the banks of the Irvine , which at this point forms the border between East and South Ayrshire , not far from the border with North Ayrshire .

Coal used to be mined in Gatehead . In 1812 the Old Rome whiskey distillery was founded near Gatehead. It was south of the Irvine in what is now South Ayrshire. At that time, however, there was only one communal county of Ayrshire . The distillery was often in financial difficulties and was finally given up in 1851 at the latest.

Gatehead Station opened in 1812 and was a stop on the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway . However, in 1969 it was closed.
