Gavriil Munteanu

Gavriil Munteanu (* February 1812 in Vingard ; † 29. December 1869 in Braşov ) was a Romanian linguist , Rumänist , lexicographer, grammarian and translator.

life and work

Munteanu grew up in Transylvania , went to school in Karlsburg ( Alba Iulia ) and studied law in Klausenburg ( Cluj-Napoca ). From 1835 he was a high school teacher in Bucharest and elsewhere. In 1851 he became the founding director of the grammar school in Brasov.

Munteanu was co-author of an extensive German-Romanian dictionary (using preliminary work by Andreas Isser ) and author of a Romanian grammar. He translated Tacitus , Suetonius and Goethe's Werther into Romanian. Munteanu was a founding member of the Romanian Academy .
