Depending on the recipe, Gazoz sometimes contains whey , basically water , sugar , carbon dioxide , citric acid and flavors , and depending on the manufacturer, other ingredients such as preservatives . The taste of the soft drink is most comparable to drinks like Sprite , but it is less sweet and more like chewing gum. Today, Gazoz is often seen alongside Ayran as a Turkish non-alcoholic national drink .
The best known brand is Uludağ Gazoz , which has been around since 1930. At that time, the drink was still produced exclusively with spring water from Mount Uludağ and was therefore only available to a limited extent. The Dutch brand Tanko Gazoz was the first major distributor for the European market from 1976. In the meantime, Coca-Cola also sells its own Gazoz brand with Sen-Sun in Turkey. In Europe, "Gazoz" is registered as a word mark by Mustafa Karadeniz. His Gazoz has been marketed in Europe since 1994.
Litigation
A trademark dispute over the use of the Turkish term “Gazoz” in Germany came to an end on April 1, 2004 with a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice .
In Germany, "Gazoz" is, in addition to its other meanings, a registered trademark for carbonated soft drinks. The reason for the legal dispute was that a company that was not a trademark owner had labeled its products with “Brause” and “Gazoz” in two languages.
The BGH ruled that as long as the defendant's range of products is primarily aimed at buyers of Turkish origin, there is no unfairness in the name of the food with the Turkish word "Gazoz", even if it is trademarked in Germany.
