Gebhardt Theodor Meier (also: Gebhard Theodor Meyer ; born May 16, 1633 in Hanover ; † December 22, 1693 in Helmstedt ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the pharmacist Jakob Meier and Ilse, the daughter of the councilor in Celle Johann Bockelmann, first received his training in his hometown and in 1649 at the grammar school in Lüneburg . He studied since April 24, 1651 at the University of Wittenberg where he initially wanted to study medicine, but switched to theological studies after half a year. In Wittenberg he had disputed with Christian Trentsch (1605–1677) and Johann Deutschmann , among others . At his father's request, he moved to the University of Helmstedt in 1653 . In Helmstedt in July 1654 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy and from 1654 held lectures on geography, history, logic and ethics.

In 1660 he became an associate professor of ethics and received his doctorate on June 25, 1661 as a doctor of theology. In 1665 he became a full professor of the sacred antiquities at the theological faculty and also took part in the organizational tasks of the Helmstedt University. He was dean of the theological faculty and three times vice-rector of the alma mater. It may have been due to his sickly nature that he did not participate in the theological disputes of his time. However, he distinguished himself through lectures and writings in the field of moral theology.

From his marriage on June 25, 1661 with Anna Sophia (+ August 15, 1621 in Helmstedt; † June 17, 1702 ibid), the widow of the Professor of Law Johann Mehlbaum (1611–1656), the daughter of the Professor of Law in Helmstedt Heinrich Schmerheim (1591–1643) and Elisabeth Rademann, the two daughters Ilsa Juliana Meier and Anna Eleonora Meier, who only lived a few years, were born.
