Gefangene Seele is a German silent film melodrama from 1917 with Henny Porten in the lead role.

action

The doctor Stefan Rainer is picked up by Baron von Groot under conspiratorial circumstances and secretly led to an unconscious lady. It is about the young Violetta, who was regularly hypnotized by the unscrupulous nobleman and, in this condition, forced to commit frauds. Violetta has been trying for some time to evade the magical, demonic gaze of the baron that casts her spell on her, but has so far failed. Dr. Rainer quickly realizes that he has to help the young woman and also falls in love with her.

In the end, poor Violetta manages to escape and ends up in Stefan Rainer's arms. They both decide to get married, but on the evening before the wedding, they receive a letter from Groots. She is still under his spell, and so she follows his invitation to meet him in the garden the following evening. Violetta takes a revolver and is later found passed out. Next to her lies the baron's body. Violetta herself cannot remember anything, but is convinced that only she could have shot the noble villain. There is a lawsuit. It turns out that a tramp fired the fatal shot.

Reviews

“This picture is one of the best Porten films. The plot begins mysteriously and keeps the interest and participation in the fate of the heroine awake until the end. The role of the artist is such that she gives her the opportunity to fully develop her game. (...) This in and of itself captivating action is strongly supported and brought to bear by the direction.
