The spotted crown snail or spotted river pitch snail ( Esperiana esperi ) is a freshwater snail up to 2.5 cm long , native to southeast Europe , that lives on mostly solid substrates in rivers and lakes and feeds on microscopic algae .

features

The right-handed, conical, ungenabelte, smooth or provided with fine increase strip housing is in the adult animal from about 1.5 cm to 2.5 cm long and about 0.6 cm to 1.1 cm wide. It then has about six to eight almost flat whorls, the top of which are often worn. The spindle gradually merges into the rounded lower edge of the housing. The basic color of the housing is brownish to pale olive green with irregular reddish brown to black spots, occasionally also completely black. The snail itself is brown with a blackish pattern.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The spotted crown snail lives in rivers and lakes on solid substrates such as stone and flooded roots, but also on mud in the bank area. Water depths of about 80 cm are preferred, and in the case of greater cold up to 2 m depth. It needs at least 12 mg O 2 / l . Their distribution area includes south-east Europe from the Black Sea to Hungary and Slovenia as well as northwestern Anatolia ( Turkey ). In Ukraine , it is threatened by habitat destruction.
