The spotted sun pointer ( Trithemis kirbyi ) is a species of dragonfly from the family of the sailing dragonflies (Libellulidae). Two subspecies are described. The nominate subspecies occurs in India and Sri Lanka , while the poorly defined taxon Trithemis kirbyi ardens occurs in the rest of the range, which mainly includes Africa .
features
The spotted sun indicator is a medium-sized dragonfly with a head-body length of 35 to 38 mm and a length of the hind wings of 25 to 26.5 mm. In the males, the head and thorax are bright red in color, the abdomen is bright orange-red. The antenna bases are reddish-brown, the labium is yellowish-brown. The eyes are bright red at the top and darken towards the bottom. The chest flanks have brown spots and short, black, wavy lines. The wings are veined in red and have large orange spots that cover about a third of the wing surface directly on the body. The pterostigmas are brownish with an orange border. There are black spots on top of the last three abdominal segments. The females are less conspicuous, yellowish to greenish-brown in color with clear wings.
Occurrence
This species lives in standing and flowing water in forests, savannas and bushland. It inhabits Africa with the exception of the tropical rainforest areas, Madagascar , the Comoros , India and the Middle East. After the first records in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula in 2007, the species has now expanded explosively in just a few years and continues to expand in Spain and Portugal.
