The Gehrensee is a 1.07 hectare comprehensive Pfuhl in the district Falkenberg of Berlin Lichtenberg district . Although it has “lake” in its name, the Gehrensee today is more like a lake with its size and depth.

Location and geology

Berlin Falkenberg Karte.png

The Gehrensee is located in the northeast of Berlin in the district Falkenberg in Berlin-Lichtenberg on the border with the Brandenburg community of Ahrensfelde . It is not far from the Falkenberger Rieselfelder nature reserve .

The northern part of the body of water borders on a former meltwater channel that runs through the area from the Berllpfuhl (sometimes also "Berlipfuhl") in the west ( Neu-Hohenschönhausen ) to Ahrensfelde in the east. The Gehrensee is fed by the uppermost aquifer and also has an inflow from the west and an outflow in the east, which drains the area towards Wuhle . The Gehrensee regularly dries up in summer.

Younger story

From 1982 the lake was no longer open to the public. Up to the Ahrensfelder Chaussee it was built around a large area with a wall and watchtowers, and a concrete wall cut the ditches from which the water was fed. For this purpose, soil material was backfilled in grassland areas. The area was then up to the year 1989, a branch office of the German Democratic Republic - Ministry of the Interior , which from this for the prison system (working satellite camp for mainly political prisoners of the penitentiary Bautzen ) and a barracks of the people's police was used. In addition, the Stasi maintained secret logistics objects on the site. To the south of the Gehrensee numerous buildings and streets were built, in the north dog kennels, which were arranged in a ring around the Gehrensee. In October 1989 demonstrators going to the SED regime were also detained here. The site has been freely accessible again since 1990. Use was abandoned, eventually dismantled and the paved areas unsealed.

A viewing platform currently provides a view of the Gehrensee, which is surrounded by bushes, wood and a 1.20 m high fence. The lake serves as a local recreation area in which rare animal species are to settle again.

Housing estate

To the south of the lake, on the site of the former barracks, the construction of a residential estate is planned. Construction of the planned 725 houses and a daycare center on the 320,000 square meter area should begin in autumn 2013 and be completed by 2018. According to the client, Deutsche Eigenheim AG, the architects Graft should build the approximately 200 million euro settlement on an area of around 132,000 m² with up to 500 2-4-storey houses from autumn 2015. However, only after the Berlin municipal housing companies Gewobag , Gesobau and Howoge had acquired the residential area for 245 million euros, construction work began at the end of 2017.
