Martin Espenhorst

Martin Espenhorst (née Peters ; born March 20, 1965 in Hanover ) is a German historian .

Life

Espenhorst studied modern and contemporary history, ancient history, literature and sociology at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the Philipps University of Marburg . He did his doctorate with Klaus Malettke on the historian, publicist and constitutional lawyer August Ludwig von Schlözer (1735–1809). In 2001/2002 he was a lecturer at the Department of History at Penn State University in Pennsylvania (USA). From 2003 to 2014 he worked at the Leibniz Institute for European History in Mainz, where he dealt with historical peace research in the pre-modern era. Under the aegis of Heinz Duchhardt , he was in charge of the coordination and project management of two (joint) projects funded by the German Research Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research: "European peace treaties in the premodern - online" and "Translation services by diplomacy and media in the premodern peace process" inside. In this context, he dealt with peace treaty discourses from the period 1600-1815. His main research interests are the sciences of the 18th century, historical peace research and cooperative theories of the 19th century. He also deals with the rural culture of the Osnabrück region and the work of the Artland writer Margarete zur Bentlage (1891–1954).

Until 2014, Espenhorst was active in Gehrde in the north of Osnabrück as a non-party councilor and chairman of the cultural committee (on the CDU list since 2011 as a result of the Lower Saxony local elections). Between 2009 and 2014 he was chairman of the Heimatverein Gehrde im Artland eV, which was founded in 1971. In 2011/2012 he was the managing director of the Kreisheimatbund Bersenbrück eV, which includes 31 Heimatvereine of the Altkreis Bersenbrück.

Since his marriage in 2011 he has taken the name of the Artländer Hof "Espenhorst".
