Geissorhiza outeniquensis is a plant from the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

description

They are 20 to 50 centimeters long, perennial, herbaceous plants that usually grow hanging or lying down and form clumps . The tuber is flattened-round, symmetrical, has a diameter of 6 to 8 millimeters and is completely concentric in several layers. It is light brown, paper and soft and easily disintegrates.

A lower sheet is missing. The four or more, lying to pendulous leaves are 3 to 6 millimeters wide, linear and reach to the base of the ear . At least the two lowest leaves are down to earth, the upper ones become smaller, attach to the stem and resemble bracts .

The stem is lying and unbranched. The inflorescence is a two- to four-flowered spike, the bracts are 16 to 20 (rarely up to 24) millimeters long, are herbaceous, but are almost membranous on the upper part (the inner ones are slightly shorter than the outer ones). The flowers are zygomorphic , drooping, pink to purple with dark markings at the base of the lower bracts and purple on the back. The flower tube is 10 to 13 millimeters long, cylindrical and as long or slightly longer than the bracts , the bracts are 26 to 32 millimeters long, 10 to 14 millimeters wide and oblong-round. The stamens are 15 to 20 millimeters long and of the same shape, the anthers 6 to 8 millimeters long, the pollen yellow. The ovary is roughly 5 millimeters long, the stylus is divided at the level of the top of the dust bag, the individual branches are 3 to 4 millimeters long and bent back.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26. Flowering time is from December to January.

distribution

Geissorhiza outeniquensis is found in South Africa exclusively in the Outeniqua Mountains in shaded locations close to water.
