The yellow summer root ( Orobanche lutea ) is a plant species from the genus summer root ( Orobanche ) in the family of summer root plants (Orobanchaceae).
description
The yellow broomrape is a 10 to 50 cm tall, parasitic plant at various Leguminosae (Fabaceae), especially on alfalfa ( Medicago ), clover ( Melilotus ) and clover ( Trifolium parasitized). The plants have a striking, sweet smell. The often dark brown stem is covered with scale leaves that are close at the base and loosely at the top.
The flowering time of the great summer root is from May to June. The crown is light brown or reddish brown in color, the upper lip is edged or bilobed, with the lobes standing upright. The back line of the crown is straight and only bends almost at right angles at the level of the upper lip. The outside of the corolla is not covered with glandular hair.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.
Occurrence
The yellow summer root is widespread in Central and Southern Europe as well as in Western Asia and Central Asia including the Caucasus. It grows on semi-arid lawns, meadows and on the edge of bushes, but also in clover and alfalfa fields. It prefers warm, moderately dry to dry, base-rich, loose, deep loam or loess soils. It occurs in Central Europe especially in societies of the Origanetalia order. It can be found at altitudes up to 950 m.
