The Yellow ageratum ( Lonas annua ) is the only type of plant genus Lonas within the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The yellow liver balm is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 30, possibly up to 60 centimeters. The stem is reddish, firm, bushy branched and upright.

The lower leaves are fan-shaped, the upper one or two pinnate, the leaf tips are linear and have a width of 0.5 to 1 millimeter.

Generative characteristics

The cup-shaped inflorescences are arranged in dense groups of four to seven, rarely they are single. The flower head cover has the shape of a hemisphere and a diameter of approximately 7 millimeters. The bracts are narrowly elliptical and rounded at the top.

The flowering period extends from August to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The yellow liver balm is found in Northwest Africa in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and also in western Sicily . In France she is a neophyte . It thrives in dry grass and garrigues at altitudes from 0 to 600 meters.

use

The yellow liver balm is rarely used as an ornamental plant for dry stone walls and rock gardens, as well as cut flowers and for dry bouquets. This plant species has been in cultivation since 1686 at the latest. The 'Goldrush' variety has compact inflorescences.

Systematics

The genus Lonas was established in 1763 by Michel Adanson in Familles des Plantes , Volume 2, page 118, 572. The new combination to Lonas annua (L.) Vines & Druce was in 1914 by Sydney Howard Vines and George Claridge Druce in Morison. Herb. , Page 71 published. Synonyms for Lonas annua (L.) Vines & Druce are Lonas inodora (L.) Gaertn. , Lonas minima Cass. , Santolina annua L. and Athanasia annua L.

Lonas annua is the only species of the genus Lonas from the tribe Anthemideae in the subfamily Asteroideae within the family Asteraceae .
