The yellow-spotted porcupinefish ( Cyclichthys spilostylus , Syn . : Cyclichthys echinatus , Chilomycterus spilostylus ) occurs in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific from South Africa via the Philippines , Australia , New Caledonia to southern Japan and the Galapagos Islands . He immigrated through the Suez Canal into the south-eastern Mediterranean ( Lesseps migration ) and can now also be found off the coast of Israel .

Way of life

Yellow-spotted porcupine fish are always close to the coast, near corals - and rock reefs overgrown with sponges, as well as seagrass meadows at depths of one to 90 meters. They are solitary and nocturnal. They hide during the day. Young fish are pelagic .

The species feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates such as snails , clams , sea ​​urchins , crabs and hermit crabs .

Yellow-spotted porcupine fish cannot fold their spines, which usually have three-part roots, backwards. In adult specimens, the spines on the dark upper side are surrounded by white or yellow spots and those on the light underside of the abdomen are surrounded by black spots. The tail fin stalk is thornless. The fish are 34 centimeters long.
