The yellow-shouldered amazon ( Amazona barbadensis ) is a species of parrot from the subfamily of the New World parrots . The basic color of the plumage of this amazon species , which is 33 centimeters tall and weighs around 340 grams, is green, the feathers are lined with black. The head plumage in particular deviates from the green body plumage. The forehead and the front parting are white, while the head area around the eyes, the back parting and the chin are yellow. The bow of the wing and the thighs are also colored yellow. The species is monotypical, i.e. i.e. no subspecies are described.

The distribution area of ​​the yellow-shouldered amazon is limited to two small areas on the coast in northern Venezuela and on the islands of Bonaire , Blanquilla and Margarita . She lives here in dry coastal areas with low vegetation, dominated by cacti. It is a typical food generalist and eats the fruits, seeds and flowers of a large number of food plants, including the fruits of cacti. It also eats the mango and maize grown on agricultural land .

Yellow-shouldered amazons are among the endangered amazon species. As with many Amazons, the population of this species is endangered by extensive habitat destruction and being caught for trade.
