The brimstone moth ( Opisthograptis luteolata ) is a butterfly of the family Spanner (Geometridae). The yellow-winged bird got its German species name because of its light yellow wings. Another common name for this species is lemon curler . In order to avoid confusion with the brimstone butterfly ( Gonepteryx rhamni ), yellow fly is mostly used as the species name.

features

The species is distinctive because of its light yellow forewings, which are lined with red-brown spots on the leading edge. There is also a white spot with a brown border on each of the forewings. The hind wings are almost pure yellow and have only a few light brown spots. The wingspan is 33 to 46 millimeters.

The caterpillars of the yellow spanner have an appendage approximately in the middle on their back, which is very variable, but does not occur in any other species and therefore serves to determine the species. The caterpillar cannot be identified by its color, as it varies between various shades of brown and green. The head shape of the caterpillars, which can be seen on the caterpillar photo, is also characteristic. The caterpillars are almost completely hairless. There is only hair on the legs and occasionally on the back.

Larval development

The caterpillars feed on various deciduous trees , such as apple trees , birches , rock pears , whitebeams , reindeer , blackthorns , gooseberries , bird cherries , willows and hawthorns . The species overwinters as a caterpillar or pupa .

Flight time

The mostly nocturnal animals fly in one generation between late April and mid-July. The caterpillars can be found from July to August. The pupa hibernates. With favorable climatic conditions, a second generation can arise from August to September. This is smaller, more intensely colored and drawn in yellow.

habitat

Since the yellow moth caterpillars feed on different deciduous trees, they are found in habitats such as mixed forests , parks and large gardens .
