Gelston , also Gilston , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or the traditional county of Kirkcudbrightshire . It is about three kilometers south of Castle Douglas and six kilometers southwest of Dalbeattie .
history
The history of the hamlet of Gelston is linked to the manor house Gelston Castle , which is located around 700 m southeast of the village. The building was built around 1805 for William Douglas, 1st Baronet , who had the village of Castle Douglas rebuilt 16 years earlier. The design is attributed to the Scottish architect Richard Crichton and is based on the work of Robert Adam . Gelston Castle was abandoned in 1940 at the latest. A fire devastated the interior.
In the 1971 census survey, Gelston counted 119 people. That was 36 inhabitants less than ten years earlier.

Gelston is just off the B727. The side road connects the village in the southwest near Kirkcudbright to the A711 and in the east to the A755 . The A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ) can be reached via the B736 near Castle Douglas .
