description

Gräfrather Strasse parish hall

The construction of the house began in 1900 and the inauguration took place on August 4, 1901. The building has two full floors above a basement, which protrudes significantly due to the slope towards the street front, as well as a loft. The facade, made of red bricks , is structured and has a number of decorative elements such as a. dividing pillars , parapet cornices or pointed arch friezes on the gable ends. Some of the windows have balustrades made of natural stone . On the ground floor they are provided with segmental arches, while those on the upper floor have pointed arches . On the street side, the gable roof is surmounted by a sandstone ridge with a weather vane that is reminiscent of a bay window and is not accessible .

During the air raid on Vohwinkel on January 1, 1945, the building was hit and badly damaged. It was rebuilt by February 1949.

It is owned by the “Evangelical Church Community Vohwinkel” and, like the extensions added later, is now used as a community center.

Monument protection and controversy

The parish hall was declared a monument on September 24, 1985 by the lower monument authority near the city of Wuppertal .

In December 2009 the parish installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of the building without prior approval . The costs for this amounted to approx. 60,000 euros. However, since solar systems on listed buildings in Wuppertal cannot be approved and no precedent should be created, the city administration requested that the system be dismantled from this roof. In the meantime, the community has collected 1,000 signatures for receipt. There is a legal dispute before the court and the petitions committee of the state parliament is dealing with the matter. In May 2011, the latter submitted a compromise proposal according to which parts of the system could be installed on the smaller roof of an annex building that is not listed as a historical monument.

In September 2011 it was declared that the disputed photovoltaic system will now be relocated to the rear extension.
