The Evangelical Church Vohwinkel is a historic sacred building in the Bergisch city of Wuppertal .

location

The church is located in Vohwinkel , the westernmost district and district (in the residential area Vohwinkel-Mitte ) south of the center with the address "Gräfrather Straße 20". The Gräfrather Straße parish hall is on the opposite side of the street.

history

The evangelical congregation in the - not least because of the railway connections - rapidly growing village of Vohwinkel split off from the “mother congregation” in Sonnborn in 1886 and became an independent parish through an erection certificate dated May 31, 1886 . Church services and community meetings initially took place in a small building in what was then "Friedrichstrasse", which, despite the expansion, was soon too cramped for the parish with its 1900 members. Therefore, funds were collected in various ways for the construction of a church of their own.

After sufficient funds were available and a suitable building site was found on what was then “Solinger Straße” in Vohwinkel (today “Gräfrather Straße”), the foundation stone was laid on July 25, 1889. It was built in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the Elberfeld architects " Plange & Hagenberg" and an examination of the same by the "Department for Church Administration and Schooling in Düsseldorf of the Royal Government" and was inaugurated on November 7th, 1890 just under a year and a half later.

In the air raid on Vohwinkel on January 1, 1945, the church was hit and badly damaged; In addition to damage to the tower and nave, all the church windows were also broken. This damage could initially be temporarily repaired by 1946. In 1962 the church building was completely renovated and in 1964 a new organ was installed by Alfred Führer .
