The community of the Augustine Sisters is a women's community based on the rules of St. Augustine of Hippo , founded in 1940. Integrated into the Roman Catholic Church , it is an institute of consecrated life in the form of a secular institute according to canon law . In addition, the community of Augustinian Sisters also exists in Würzburg and Vogelsberg as an eV ( registered association ).

history

On December 8, 1940, in the middle of World War II , Father Hermenegild Maria Biedermann OSA founded the "Augustinus Circle". Since 1957 the women were at home at the Vogelsburg . In 1959 the community was recognized as the secular " Third Order of St. Augustine" and continued to have the mother house on the Vogelsburg, which also includes the Church of the Protection of the Virgin. In 1966 the historic monastery building on the Vogelsburg was redesigned into a conference center. From 1959 to 1971 members of the women's community in Bisidimo , Ethiopia , cared for lepers . In 2011 the Vogelsburg became the property of the Juliusspital Würzburg Foundation . "The Juliusspital Foundation will preserve the Vogelsburg as a recognizable unit, as a place of spirituality and encounter, in particular by maintaining the building and continuing a living liturgy in the Church of Mariä Schutz." to grant five Augustine sisters a right to live in the convent building for life and to take care of them when they are in need of care. The center that grew up at the Heuchelhof in Würzburg : The Augustinianum, the historic Zwickerleinshof, has been the community's motherhouse since 1998.

structure

The generalate in Würzburg consists of elected members and is divided into the prioress , subprioress and the council of sisters. Spiritual and pastoral care is provided by a priest of the Augustinian order . A shared apartment lives in the center of Würzburg and a small part of the convent lives on the Vogelsburg. The spiritual mission is the celebration of church services ; the community offers a place of encounter, for regular get-togethers, for relaxation and contemplation, and for housing suitable for the elderly.

Spiritual alignment

The women's community follows Augustinian spirituality and is dependent on the life of St. Augustine coined. Her ideal is : "One heart and one soul towards God". Members commit themselves to community life and make a religious promise . In particular, prayer is part of everyday life. A distinction is made between two forms of life: the "outer circle" means life in marriage , family or as an individual, the "inner circle" is shaped by the evangelical councils and means life in community of property , celibacy and availability. These two circles of life are reflected in the community's logo : The burning heart of St. Augustine and the two circles that are intended to indicate the forms of attachment.

Viticulture has been documented at Vogelsburg since 906 . In 1895 it was bought by Josef Walter from Würzburg in order to set up a restaurant for excursions. His daughter Philippine helped him set up an additional spiritual and religious center. On January 1, 1957, she transferred the Vogelsburg to the community of the Augustine Sisters. In 1964 the business was converted to ecological cultivation. The focus here was on “preserving creation”. On January 1, 2011, the entire Vogelsburg property was transferred to the Juliusspital Würzburg Foundation. The restaurant belonging to the building complex is a popular destination. The organic winery is known beyond the borders of Lower Franconia .
