Gene Taylor (* 19th March 1929 in Toledo (Ohio) as Calvin Eugene Taylor ; † 22. December 2001 in Sarasota , Florida) was an American jazz - bassist of hard bop which also New Orleans Blues played.

Life

Gene Taylor started out on the sousaphone , played the piano for a short time, then turned to the bass. Taylor will be remembered most as a member of the Horace Silver quintet , in which he appeared from 1958 to 1962. He visited Europe with Silver in 1962. From 1964 he worked for Blue Mitchell and toured Japan with his quintet in 1965 . He also played freelance with Thelonious Monk , Howard McGhee , Duke Pearson , Junior Cook . In the late 1960s he worked with Coleman Hawkins , with whom he recorded one of his last albums, and with Eddie Jefferson . In 1975 he still recorded with Barry Harris .
