Governor General of Korea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Governor General of Korea ( 朝鮮 總督 , reformed spelling 朝鮮 総 督 , Japanese Chōsen sōtoku , Kor. Joseon chongdok ) was the main administrator of Korea during the Japanese occupation between 1910 and 1945 . The seat of the colonial government ( 朝鮮 総 督府 , Chōsen sōtokufu ) was the governor-general building ( 朝鮮 総 督府 庁 舎 , Chōsen sōtokufu chōsha ), which was completed in 1926.

history

After the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910, the office of local governor was replaced by that of governor-general. The position was unique in the outer possessions of Japan in that the governor general held general authority over Korea and the governor general position also included judicial oversight and some legislative powers. However, the Governor General had no authority over the Japanese Imperial Army or the Japanese Imperial Naval Units stationed in Korea. Given the powers and responsibilities of the office, only high-ranking generals of the Japanese army were selected for the office of governor general (with the sole exception of retired admiral Saitō Makoto).

After the Japanese defeat in World War II, the Korean peninsula was administered by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea . The governor general's building was completely demolished on August 15, 1995 during the tenure of South Korean President Kim Yong-Sam .

Prime Minister of Japan

Four people who held the post of Governor General of Korea also held the post of Japanese Prime Minister . Three, Terauchi Masatake , Saitō Makoto, and Koiso Kuniaki , were governors-general before becoming prime ministers. One, Abe Nobuyuki , was Prime Minister prior to his appointment as Governor General.
